Super Mario Maker 2 may have added Legend of Zelda hero Link back in December, but its April 22 update is all about classic Mario elements — like the ability to create your own world maps. You can use them to link up to 40 courses together, and essentially create your own old-school 2D Mario adventure.

You can choose from themes like basic green field, underground, desert and snow, create a layout, then add routes, Toad Houses (so you can force people to play that infuriating picture matching minigame) and pieces of scenery. After that, you can drop in courses you’ve made onto the route and share your masterpiece online.

The update also lets you add the Koopalings (first seen as bosses in Super Mario Bros. 3) as enemies, along with the key-chasing Phanto from Super Mario Bros. 2

It brings a bunch of powerups like the Frog Suit and Super Acorn too, but the coolest is the Super Mario Bros. 2 Mushroom. It gives you abilities that were unique to that game, so you can casually stand on enemies’ backs, pick them up and mercilessly throw them.

This year marks Mario’s 35th anniversary, and March reports suggested that Nintendo is planning to release remastered versions of classic 3D adventures like Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine to celebrate.
